Gambas: new development version

A new development version of Gambas, the Visual Basic-like development environment for X11, has been released. Version 1.9.45 includes a new CGI web applications module with an ASP-like interface, a redesigned "new project" dialog, a Farsi translation, and numerous bug fixes (changes affect configuration, the IDE, the database manager, the Wiki CGI script, the interpreter and compiler, and the Qt, KDE, database, SDL, GTK and Form components; full changelog here). Screenshots here, downloads and instructions (source only) here. Stable version, recommended for any production work, remains 1.0.17 (22nd July 2006) and is available from the same location.

QDevelop v0.20 released

Version 0.20 of the Qt4-based IDE QDevelop (originally QIde) has been released. Changes include:

  • a new C++ highlighter
  • experimental CMake build system
  • Polish, Spanish, Chinese and Russian translations
  • a new bookmark facility, which can be saved in the project settings
  • class browser supporting operator overloading
  • project templates

kdesvn v0.11.0 released

Version 0.11.0 of kdesvn, a KDE client for the version control software Subversion, has been released. Changes include:

  • fixes in the CMake build system and to a bug affecting building on Solaris
  • a fix to a problem with dialogs storing sizes into the wrong config files when using it as a KPart
  • coloured annotation with improved display speed

Jambi: third preview released

Trolltech has released a third technology preview of Qt Jambi, its Java bindings for Qt (documentation here). This preview is based on Qt 4.2 and supports JavaDoc, SVG, Java enums and type-safe QFlags. They have also announced a developer competition, to produce a demo application which uses the Qt Graphics View and/or the Item Views Framework; the prize is a 2GHz MacBook and the deadline is 15th Dec this year. Kubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) released

Canonical has announced that version 6.10 (i.e. October 2006) of Ubuntu, and by extension Kubuntu, have been released. This version features KDE 3.5.5 (based on Qt 3.3.6), digital photo manager Digikam by default, a new hardware database client, an improved System Settings application (basically the KDE Control Center behind a Mac-like system preferences window) and Qt 4.2.0. Underneath, it's Linux 2.6.17, GLibc 2.4 and GCC 4.1. Screenshots here with download locations here; installation instructions at the bottom of this page. Available, as usual, for i386, AMD64 and PowerPC (server version may be available on other platforms like SPARC). This is not a long-term support version like Dapper (6.06); it will be supported for the usual 18 months.

KDE Radio releases aKademy recordings

KDE://radio has released a number of recordings made at this year's aKademy conference in Dublin (HT: Aaron Seigo). The recordings are a series of interviews by Wade Olsen and cover topics like KDE 4, KDE artwork and uptake of KDE and open source in general in Asia. At the moment they are the top six recordings at the site and are available in MP3 or OGG format. This is a link to the site's RSS feed.

WebIssues v0.8.1 released

Version 0.8.1 of WebIssues, an issue tracking tool for project groups collaborating over the internet with a KDE client, has been released. Changes:

  • "A complete user interface for defining attribute types"
  • Now handles links to other issues, comments and attachments in comments and attribute values
  • Handles links to external URLs and emails
  • Now possible to quickly find any issue, comment or attachment with an ID.
  • All basic features of client now complete and ready to use

BasKet Note Pads v0.6.0 released

Version 0.6.0 of BasKet Note Pads, a note-taking application allowing various types of objects to be drag-dropped into "baskets", has been released. This is identical to the last release candidate. Requires KDE 3.

Dolphin File Manager v0.7.0 released

Version 0.7.0 of the Dolphin File Manager, a KDE file manager with a navigation bar, has been released. Changes include:

  • New French, Polish, Estonian and Hebrew translations
  • Updated documentation
  • Support for renaming of several items
  • Default "System" bookmark replaced by "Storage Media", "Network" and "Trash"
  • Various bug fixes and UI improvements

SIM IM v0.9.4.1 released

From KDE Apps:

Version 0.9.4.1 of SIM Instant Messenger, a multi-protocol instant messenger program, has been released. Changes include a fix to building with X11 on Mac OS X, a fix to deleting contacts with the Del key, the use of ICQ Lite smiles by default, a fix to various crash bugs caused when using proxies and several fixes to the LiveJournal and GPG support. Screenshots at KDE Apps; downloads (source, Windows installer, various Linux distro binaries) here. Supports Oscar, Jabber, LiveJournal, MSN and Yahoo. Requires Qt 3 and several other packages (see here).

Security fixes for three Qt versions

Trolltech has announced that it has released three new versions of Qt (3.3.7, 4.1.5 and 4.2.1) featuring security fixes over their predecessors. The security flaw involves the processing of bitmapped images, which can be triggered by transforming specially prepared bitmaps from untrusted sources. A patch is supposedly available, but I can't find it; the sources can be downloaded from the Qt download page.

Qt 4.2 packages for Fedora available

Packages of Qt 4.2.0 for Fedora Core 5 (and possibly earlier versions) are available from several Fedora mirrors; they are listed here at the pbone RPM search site. You need to copy the links to any of the mirrors, remove the filename at the end, and pick the packages out of the resulting listing.

aKademy 2007 to be held in Glasgow

The next aKademy conference for KDE contributors will be held next June and July at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. It will be organised by a local team headed by Kenny Duffus; the schedule is as follows:

  • 29th June (Fri): Arrival
  • 30th June & 1st July: Contributors' conference
  • 2nd July: KDE e.V. Membership Meeting (for members only)
  • 3rd - 7th July: Hacking sessions & workshops
  • 8th July: departure

KFTPGrabber v0.8.0 beta released

A first beta of version 0.8.0 of KFTPGrabber, a graphical FTP client for KDE which supports SSL and FXP, has been released. Changes:

  • Rewritten browser view to support folders with a lot of files
  • Added "move to top/bottom" options to the queue
  • Added option to toggle use of primary connection for transfers
  • Added "open in Konqueror" shortcut
  • Fixed crash which occurred when aborting in SFTP
  • Properly filter selections when using the as-you-type filter

Smb4K v0.7.3 released

Version 0.7.3 of Smb4K, a KDE Samba share browser, has been released. Changes include:

  • Rewritten help texts for the utility programs
  • Updated handbook (to v1.0.0) and README
  • Fixed two File I/O issues including the writing of /etc/sudoers in Ubuntu
  • Reintroduced Chinese Traditional translation and updated several others

KOffice v1.6 released

The KOffice Project today announced the release of version 1.6 of their software. According to the announcement the most important new features are in Krita, which "steps up and becomes usable for professional image editing", and the database client Kexi, which gains Kross scripting, automatic data type recognition and the ability to handle images and compact the database. BasKet Note Pads 0.6 RC released

A release candidate of version 0.6.0 of BasKet Note Pads, an all-purpose note taker allowing various objects to be drag-dropped into "baskets", has been released. This version has been declared stable, and numerous bugs and crashes have been fixed (full list here). Source download here. Outgoing stable version is 0.5.0; screenshots here, downloads (source, various distro binaries) here. Requires KDE 3.

Reveal v1.2 released

Verson 1.2 of Reveal, an EXIF metadata viewer which uses Qt 4, has been released. Changes:

  • Read support for ten new file formats, including PNG, TIFF and several RAW formats
  • Embedded thumbnail images in the details pane
  • Photo descriptions editable in the Summary pane
  • Smoother zooming of thumbnails in the summary pane
  • New app icon and about window
  • Now uses Qt 4.2 and eviv2 v0.11

KScope v1.4.2 released

Version 1.4.2 of KScope, a source browsing and editing environment for large C projects, has been released. Changes:

  • New: Tool-tips for the project's file list
  • New: "Find Definition" entry in the query-results popup menu
  • Improved: Added '*.S' (kernel assembly files) to the list of standard file types
  • Improved: Some code clean-ups in the query-results popup menu
  • Bug fix: All query results following a global definition were omitted

Mark Shuttleworth becomes KDE Patron

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Canonical (which produces Ubuntu) has become the first patron of KDE under a new scheme to honour major financial contributors to the KDE project. This new scheme was announced by KDE e.V.'s new Supporting Members scheme at the recent KDE 10th anniversary celebrations.
